As Línguas Cooficializadas e sua implementação nas escolas de São Gabriel da Cachoeira: impasses e perspectivas

Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, located in the far northwest of Amazonas, which pioneered the coofficialization of four indigenous languages spoken in the Alto Rio Negro region: Nheengatú, Tukano, Baniwa, and Ianomami. This initiative marks an important milestone for the co- officialization of other indigenous and non-indigenous languages in various regions of Brazil within the field of linguistics. The main objective of the work is to discuss the current situation of language policies following co-officialization, with an emphasis on the quality of Indigenous School Education in municipal schools and the role of other institutions in the municipality, as well as the political- administrative organization by the Legislative and Executive branches. The research is based on a literature review and field investigation, through interviews with parents of students from different schools, teachers, and the pedagogue of the Escola Municipal Indígena Tenente Jefferson. The study also analyzes the performance of teachers in the “Práticas e Diversidades” (Practices and Diversities) subject and their pedagogical practices. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for valuing the sociocultural diversity present in the region are discussed.
