O universo politeístico amazônico na contística ribeirinha de Arthur Engrácio

Abstract

Arthur Engrácio, a little-known Amazonian writer, is an accomplished prose author. Therefore, this dissertation is the result of a research that pointed out the imaginary elements in Arthur Engrácio's short stories manifested in terms such as water and earth, highlighting the residual literary resources used by the author to represent the Amazonian man and the contingencies of his existence. When it comes to method, this dissertation addresses the divinity attributed to the elements that emerge to explain social and cultural facts through the literary text, permeated by the way human issues are homogenized with natural issues, passing through the understanding of violence that is often portrayed in the author's short story structure. To this end, the study focused on the short stories “A voz do rio”, included in the work Estórias do rio (1984), and “A Caçada”, found in Contos do mato (1981). I analyze Engrácio's work by using concepts from the Theory of Literary and Cultural Residuality (TRLC), initially coined by Roberto Pontes. The methodological path of this dissertation was basically through bibliographical research, including in this scope texts of literary theory and criticism on literary fantasy, writings on Amazonian literature and culture, and the two works by Engrácio mentioned above.
